Egbert W. Beach Elementary School, commonly known as Beach School, is one of the three elementary schools in Piedmont, California. Beach offers classes beginning from kindergarten through fifth grade. It is one of the feeder schools to Piedmont Middle School.

Beach School is part of the Piedmont Unified School District.

History

Beach School was established in 1913. It was the city's second elementary school and it preceded the building of Piedmont High School in 1921.[2]

The school was named in honor of Egbert W. Beach, the first man from Piedmont to die in World War I.[3]

Unlike the other elementary schools in the district, which are all well within a one-mile radius of each other, Beach School is relatively far from the center of town. It is several blocks from Piedmont Avenue, which lies within the boundaries of the Oakland city limites. Beach School is within the City of Piedmont.

Demographics

Piedmont children attend the elementary school closest to their home. As of 2008-2009, Beach had an enrollment of 312 students.[1] Many of the students come from an affluent background. The average home value in the area averages slightly more than $1 million. The total per pupil expenditure for the Piedmont Unified School District is $9,855.[5]

Zero percent of the student body participates in free or reduced-price lunch programs, compared to the state average of 51 percent.[6]

Ethnicity and diversity

The student population is primarily white (58 percent) and Asian (15 percent). Other racial groups include black (4 percent) and Hispanic/Latino (3 percent). The remaining 19 percent includes students of mixed race and those who declined to respond.[7]

Academics

One hundred percent of Beach teachers have full credentials, and the average number of years teaching is 16. The ratio of students to paraprofessional staff is 15:1.[6] The school's API Statewide Rank for 2005 was 10.[6] Its API score was 942,[8] the highest of the three elementary schools in Piedmont,.[9] The district average was 920.[10] The state average was 709.[8]

The website greatschools.net, which reviews schools for their quality and collects statistics and feedback, gave Beach a 10 out of 10 for test scores.[11] Parent rating also gave the school a maximum score — five stars — for its academics.[11]

Beach Elementary School is ranked 42 of 5168 Californian public elementary schools.[1]

After-school activities

Beach Schoolmates is a before and after school program run by the Piedmont Recreation Department. Located on the school's campus, children of working parents remain at Schoolmates until their parents pick them up. The Recreation Department is run by the city of Piedmont, and it is not part of the Piedmont Unified School District.
